WASHINGTON (AP) —A new drug to treat heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and other heartburn ailments is out, but there are some other potential remedies.

An innovative drug called Nexium (esomeprazole) can help protect the lining of the stomach and help ease acid reflux and ulcers in people suffering from GERD and other heartburn conditions.

But researchers at San Diego-based Sanofi-Aventis, the maker of Nexium, said its drug works only for acid reflux. It has not been approved for use in children under the age of 12.

It's not clear whether the drug is safe for people under the age of 12. But the FDA has approved it for use in children under the age of 18.

Nexium, which is sold as Nexium, is the second approved drug for treating heartburn, the most common type of acid-related problem in people with GERD.

Last year, Sanofi-Aventis and other drugmakers agreed to pay $1.7 billion to settle claims the drug caused heartburn in more than 1,000 patients, according to government data.

The drug is still under review, but Sanofi officials said it could be available in late June or July.

The drug is designed to be taken by adults and children between the ages of 12 and 18.

The agency said its most recent research found that people who took a 40-milligram dose of Nexium had a reduced risk of developing heartburn.

The drug could help patients with acid reflux and ulcers by reducing stomach acid production.

"The safety and efficacy of Nexium (esomeprazole) for the treatment of acid reflux, GERD, and other heartburn conditions remain to be established," said Sanofi-Aventis's chief executive Hank McKinnell. "The availability of this drug for those indications is important."

AstraZeneca's Sanofi has been under scrutiny for its heartburn drugs, including Nexium and Prilosec.

Sanofi's drugmaker said its research shows that Nexium, once approved for acid reflux, can protect the lining of the stomach and ease acid reflux and ulcers in people suffering from GERD and other heartburn conditions.

AstraZeneca's Sanofi said it is taking the drug for patients who experience heartburn.

The company has not disclosed the number of patients being prescribed the drug.

The FDA says the drugs do not have a safety or efficacy endpoint and are not intended to be used for clinical trials.

But Sanofi's Sandoes believe the drug is safe.
